How we began...
Don’t let anyone ever tell you that impulsive drunken decisions are be avoided.
Wordier Than Thou was born in 2012 after imbibing several delicious craft beers with a writer friend. The idea was simple but unique: a storytelling and prose open mic series. There were already so many open mics out there that catered to poetry, music and spoken word. Fiction and creative non-fiction writers needed their own outlet, a place to tell their stories to other writers or those who simply love to hear a good tale.
That night, I contacted the owner of a venue in St. Petersburg that boasted a small black box theater that was perfect for what I envisioned. By the next day, I had a date and started contacting every writer I knew or wanted to know.
In just 24 hours, we were well on our way to turning Wordier Than Thou into reality.
Our monthly open mics continue to bring out a bevy of talented local writers who are excited to share their work and interact with other wordsmiths. But we've also begun to expand. Along with holding additional open mics in north Pinellas County, Tampa and Sarasota, we've published a literary magazine, launched a radio show, created a supportive network for writers and partnered with other organizations to foster a thriving literary scene in the Tampa Bay region.
Our latest endeavor is Florida Bookstore Day, celebrating the state's writers and independent bookshops.
If you're interested in partnering with us on any current (or new) endeavors, email us at WordierThanThou@gmail.com. Be sure to keep up with our updates on Facebook.
